2026 Illinois Marching Band Adjudicator Availability – CK Marching Services
CK Marching Services is now accepting select adjudication opportunities for the 2026 Illinois marching band season. With more than 25 years of experience in the marching arts, Chris Keniley brings an educational, program-centered approach to marching band adjudication.
Adjudication experience includes Music, Visual, Percussion, Drum Major, and General Effect, including both individual and ensemble captions.
An Educational Approach to Marching Band Adjudication
The philosophy behind CK Marching Services adjudication is simple:
Evaluate what the performers present—not impose what a show “should” be.
Every marching band is different. Programs have different numbers of students, resources, experience levels, traditions, competitive goals, and approaches to show design. Effective adjudication should recognize those differences while consistently evaluating the quality and achievement demonstrated by the performers.
An adjudicator’s responsibility isn’t to redesign a production from the judging area. Instead, the goal should be to understand what the director and designers are trying to accomplish and evaluate how successfully the students communicate that intent through music, movement, and overall effect.
Respecting Different Approaches to Show Design
There isn’t one formula for an effective marching band production.
A rock show can simply be an outstanding rock show. A Latin-inspired production doesn’t necessarily need an elaborate storyline. A traditional marching band production can be just as effective as a highly theatrical one.
What matters is whether the production makes sense, whether the musical and visual ideas are communicated effectively, and—most importantly—how well the students perform what has been given to them.
Adjudication should evaluate achievement rather than encourage every program to follow the same design trends.
Feedback for Directors AND Students
Adjudication recordings aren’t only for directors. Students listen to them, too.
That makes the educational value of commentary especially important. Feedback should recognize what performers are doing successfully while clearly identifying opportunities for improvement.
CK Marching Services strives to provide commentary that is:
- Fair and consistent
- Clear and constructive
- Appropriate to the caption being evaluated
- Respectful of the director’s design intent
- Focused on student achievement
- Useful in the next rehearsal
- Educational for both students and staff
The goal is for directors and students to leave an event with useful information that can help the ensemble continue developing throughout the season.
