Starting Band? Chris K Music Can Help Get Your Student Ready to Play
Starting band is an exciting milestone for a young musician. Choosing an instrument, learning the first notes, and becoming part of a school ensemble can open the door to years of music-making.
But there is one thing that can make those first few weeks much easier: starting with an instrument that works properly.
At Chris K Music in Mattoon, Illinois, Mr. Keniley works with students and families to help make the beginning-band experience as successful as possible. From inspecting a used instrument to private lessons, Chris K Music can help before and after that first day of band.
Have a Used Instrument? Get It Checked Before Band Starts
A used instrument can be an excellent and affordable choice for a beginning band student. However, an instrument that has been sitting in a closet, basement, attic, or storage room may need attention before a student begins playing it.
Even an instrument that looks good on the outside can have problems that make playing unnecessarily difficult.
Depending on the instrument, issues can include:
- Leaking or damaged woodwind pads
- Worn corks
- Stuck brass slides
- Slow or sticking valves
- Dirty internal tubing
- Loose screws or keywork
- Damaged water-key corks
- Drumhead or tuning problems
- General cleaning and maintenance needs
A beginning student may assume they are doing something wrong when the real problem is the instrument.
Chris K Music offers used instrument cleaning, service and inspections to help determine whether an instrument is ready for a new musician.
Looking for an Affordable Used Band Instrument?
You don’t necessarily have to purchase a brand-new instrument to get your student started.
Chris K Music has a limited selection of used instruments available for purchase, and inventory changes as instruments become available.
Don’t see the instrument you need? I can also help families locate used instruments to purchase.
This can be especially helpful when shopping through Facebook Marketplace, local sellers, online listings, or other used-instrument sources. I can help you evaluate potential options and, once purchased, inspect, clean, service, or repair the instrument as needed so it is ready for the student.
If you’ve found an instrument you’re considering purchasing, contact me before you buy it. I’m happy to help you determine whether it appears to be a reasonable option.
Drum Repair & Tuning
Beginning percussionists need properly functioning equipment, too.
Chris K Music provides drum repair and tuning services, including help with common hardware, drumhead, and tuning issues.
Properly maintained percussion equipment doesn’t just sound betterβit allows students to learn correct technique without fighting against equipment problems.

Helping Students Start Band the Right Way
For more than 25 years, I’ve worked with young musicians as a private instructor, band instructor, clinician, performer, and music educator.
One of the most important things I’ve learned is that students need equipment that allows them to succeed.
When a beginning musician can’t produce a note because a clarinet is leaking, a trumpet valve isn’t functioning correctly, or another mechanical problem is getting in the way, practicing becomes frustrating very quickly.
Sometimes a simple inspection, cleaning, adjustment, or repair can make an enormous difference.
If your student is starting their new adventure in band, I’d be happy to help.
