Sometimes an instrument needs a repair. Sometimes it needs a thorough cleaning or a small adjustment. Other times, the instrument may be working perfectly and the issue could be a reed, mouthpiece, setup, maintenance routine, or another part of the playing process.
Because I work with musicians as both a music educator and instrument repair provider, I can approach problems from both sides.
The goal isn’t simply to repair something — it’s to determine why the musician is having difficulty and find the best solution.

The beginning of the school year is an especially important time to make sure band instruments are working correctly.
An instrument that has been sitting during the summer may develop stuck slides, sluggish valves, sticky pads, dried corks, or other maintenance issues. Even a small problem can make playing unnecessarily difficult for a beginning or developing musician.

For students in particular, this is important. A mechanical problem can quickly become frustrating when a young musician believes they simply “can’t play” something that their instrument is making unnecessarily difficult.
Likewise, replacing parts or performing repairs isn’t helpful when the instrument is already functioning properly.
Good troubleshooting helps determine the difference.
