Learn to Count 16th Note Drum Fills Using Fruit! ππ₯
Learning drum fills can feel overwhelming when you’re first introduced to counting rhythms like 1 e + a, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes the best learning tools are things you already knowβlike fruit!
In my newest YouTube Short, I demonstrate a fun and memorable way to count 16th-note drum fills by using fruit names. Associating rhythms with familiar words helps students internalize timing, develop better rhythmic accuracy, and make practicing much more enjoyable.
Why This Method Works
One of the biggest challenges for beginning drummers is counting while playing. Instead of focusing on numbers alone, using everyday words creates a natural rhythm that is easier to remember.
For example, many four-syllable fruit names naturally fit the spacing of 16th notes. Once students become comfortable saying the words, they can transfer that same rhythm directly to the drumset.
This technique is especially helpful for:
- Beginning drummers
- School band percussion students
- Drumset students
- Music educators looking for creative teaching ideas
- Parents helping students practice at home
Making learning fun often leads to faster progress and greater confidence behind the drumset.
