Marching Band Drill Design: Using Layering to Improve Sound Projection
Great marching band drill should do more than create exciting visual moments. Good drill design should also support the sound of the ensemble.
One consideration I make when writing drill for CK Marching Services is how performer placement can affect sound projection.
Straight Lines Can Create Sound Problems
When musicians are positioned directly behind one another in straight or tightly stacked lines, performers in front can interfere with the sound coming from behind them.
This becomes especially important during big musical moments when you want the ensemble projecting clearly toward the audience.
That’s why drill shouldn’t be designed only by asking:
“Does this form look good?”
We should also ask:
“Does this form allow the ensemble to sound good?”
Using Layering and Spacing in Drill Design
Strategic layering can create visual depth while giving individual performers more open space in front of them.
Instead of consistently stacking performers directly behind one another, I look for opportunities to use:
- Staggered or layered positioning
- Effective performer spacing
- Forms that naturally open toward the audience
- Staging that supports important musical voices
- Visual movement that temporarily offsets stacked performers
The goal isn’t to avoid straight lines. Straight lines can create powerful visual moments. The key is understanding when and how to use them based on what’s happening musically.

Already have a section of drill where performers are stacked behind one another?
Consider adding a body or upper-body visual that temporarily offsets performers from the person directly in front of them.
It can add visual interest while also helping open up the form during an important musical moment.
