Recently, I cleaned and serviced a baritone at Chris K Music in Mattoon, Illinois. The instrument was still playable when it came in, but once it was disassembled, the buildup inside showed exactly why regular instrument maintenance is so important.

Preventative maintenance cannot eliminate every future repair, but it can help extend the useful life of an instrument and reduce problems caused by neglect and accumulated buildup.
How Often Should an Instrument Be Professionally Serviced?
There isn’t one schedule that works for every musician.
How frequently an instrument needs professional attention depends on how often it is played, the age and condition of the instrument, how well it is maintained at home, and the environment in which it is used.
For heavily used student and school instruments, periodic professional inspection and cleaning is a good habit.
And if you’re noticing sticking valves, difficult slides, unusual resistance, changes in response, or another mechanical issue, don’t wait for the problem to get worse.
