Reimagining a Classic Hymn: “Are You Washed in the Blood?” as a Sea Shanty
“Are You Washed in the Blood?” is a hymn that many people know well—but what happens when you place it in a completely different musical setting?
In this arrangement, I explored the style of a traditional sea shanty—focusing on strong pulse, driving groove, and a sense of collective energy. Sea shanties are rooted in work songs, designed to unify a group through rhythm and shared musical purpose. That same concept can bring a fresh perspective to familiar material.
By shifting the feel and stylistic approach, the goal wasn’t to change the message of the hymn, but to highlight it in a new way—making it feel more immediate, engaging, and rhythmically alive.
This kind of reimagining is something I emphasize in both performance and education. Music doesn’t have to stay confined to one style—when students and ensembles explore different genres, they develop stronger listening skills, creativity, and versatility.
Whether you’re a director looking for creative programming ideas, or a musician interested in new approaches to familiar music, projects like this can open the door to new possibilities.
