Watching a Show Come to Life
One of the most rewarding parts of what I do with CK Marching Services isn’t just writing drill or arranging music—it’s seeing those ideas come to life through the hard work of students and directors.
Throughout the summer, directors and staff from around the country send rehearsal photos and videos showing their bands’ progress. Every update is a reminder that what begins as dots on paper, musical ideas, and visual concepts becomes something much bigger through countless hours of rehearsal and dedication.
It’s exciting to watch students gain confidence as drill starts to flow, music becomes more expressive, visuals become cleaner, and the entire ensemble begins performing as one. Whether it’s a small band preparing for Friday night football games or a competitive program aiming for a championship season, every group has its own story and goals.
One area I especially enjoy designing is the integration of the color guard throughout the marching ensemble. Rather than simply placing the guard along the front sideline, thoughtful staging allows them to become part of the overall visual production. When music, drill, and color guard work together, the audience experiences a more engaging and cohesive performance.
Thank you to every director, staff member, and student who has shared your progress with me this season. I truly appreciate being part of your journey and look forward to watching each production continue to grow throughout rehearsals, football games, festivals, and competitions this fall.
